Pope Incident Apologies Update

As you might have read on the September News page, rumours (incl. newspapers) say Sinead made her apologies to the pope for tearing his photo back in 1992 during her infamous Saterday Night Live appearance. On of the papers wrote;

Sinead News From The Drudge Report

SINEAD O'CONNOR: POPE, PLEASE FORGIVE ME

Rocker Sinead O'Connor is asking for the Pope's forgiveness for tearing up his photograph during a live broadcast on SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE. Back in '92, after performing a song on the show, O'Connor brandished a picture of Pope John Paul II telling viewers to: "Fight the real enemy."

O'Connor, 30, now says:

"Tearing up the Pope's photo was ridiculous. I want to leave all that anger behind me... I am a Catholic and had a very strong religious upbringing. But although I rebelled against the Pope in a vulgar way I did it because I was struggling against my faith, not because I lost it... It was a gesture of a prodigal daughter, although one who despite everything still hopes that she can find her true home in the church. That is because we are all the church. And sooner or later you realize that love has a much greater power than anger."

O'Connor's turn has become top talk of European media this weekend, with speculation in London that the Pope will personally consider accepting the singer's apology.

Irish church spokesman Jim Cantwell explains to British press: "Her remarks are to be welcomed. Since reconciliation is central to the Catholic Church's mission, any genuine attempt at reconciliation would be certain to meet with a sympathetic response"...

-------------

Another magazine (Italian magazine called "Vita") wrote the next thing (thanx to Daniele for her translation);

"Vita" is a non profit magazine promoted by the volounteers Association, and Sinéad is mentioned in a general article about Church and rock music relationship

The title of Sinéad's part of this article is:

-I APOLOGIZE TO THE POPE-

(These words aren't between inverted commas but only a title invented by a journalist.)

Here follows Daniele's translation:

I think that tearing Pope's picture on TV was a ridiculous thing. Now I want to leave behind that rage, but I don't want to deny it at all. Saint Augustin said that rage is the first step that leads to courage. Each morning many people won't even get off the bed if they weren't upset with the entire world. But sooner or later you understand that love is much more powerful than rage. I'm catholic, and I received a religious education. When i turned against the Pope, I did it because I was fighting with my faith. It was an action of a rebel daughter who yet hopes to find in the Church her home. Because we are the Church. Like many catholics I surely don't like too rigid rules. But I became mature. I'm 30 and 2 sons. I worked hard to reach happyness: it's easy to scream with a guitar, but that dimension doesn't belong to me anymore. Now I'm in peace. And to those who tell me that creativity comes from grief, I answer that it's not true. You only have to listen to my latest albums and discover that they are much better than my first ones.

To be more precise there's also a picture of Sinéad with these words:"The Irish singer Sinéad O'Connor repents"

As you see, the body of this article doesn't tell anything more than those published all around the world during this year. It doesn't have an "exclusive interview" or something like that, but it's a collection of sentences pronunced (at least should be)by S. Of course there's no trace of these famous apologies.

---------------

Like many other fans I couldn't believe Sinead really said this, knowing that in a lot of her recent interviews she always said she doesn't regret it at all. No one seems to have seen or heard her giving her apologies to the pope personally. But what a whole lot people does have seen/heard is the interview Sinead had during her Unplugged Session at "Sessions At West 54th Street" on PBS (a US-tv program) where the next thing happened;

She was asked what she thought of her act of tearing up the picture of the Pope on SNL (which incidentally was the same picture hanging on the wall of her mother's living room)... She smile into the camera and said that she was "sorry" and then she said "not really actually..."

I suppose all the newspaper-reporters ran to their typing machine without having heard the last words....

Song With No Name

On a BBC2-special about Shane MacGowan (The Great Hunger - The Life and songs of Shane MacGowan) today (in the evening) Sinead sung a new song which I've never heard before. It's a song written by Shane and the tv-special is probably recorded in 1996 early 1997. The song is totally a-capella by Sinead only.

This song is available as a Real Audio File through my homepage.The title of the new song is simply "SONG WITH NO NAME"

Sinead Mailing List Info

Just something for your curiosity;

There are 322 adresses where the JITR (Sinead-Mailing List) is being send to. Some people have a subscribtion on more then one adress and some do have a subscribtion on both versions of the JITR (The Direct Mail Version and the Digest Version) so it ain't realistic to say there are 322 persons subscribed to the JITR, but in persons I think it will be about 250. Of those 322 subscribtions 131 are subscribtions to the Digest version and 191 are subscribtions to the Direct Version of the Jitr.

As you see there are enough people subscribed to the Mailing List to not miss any news from anywhere over the world. So if you're a fan and wanna know everything about Sinead and still aren't subscribed to this mailing list, you'll miss a lot...
