June 13th 1998, New York USA, Fleadh Festival

By Yellie

i just got back from the nyc fleadh show, which i snuck into you using the posted method, and sinead was great. she looked gorgous, her head is shaved and she hasn't gained any weight, and her voice was the best i've heard it live in the fives times i've seen her. she wore a red shirt, and black zipper sweater. the set was basically the same as the london show with the exception of not playing "this is to mother you". it took me awhile to lose my self-consciousness, but when she sang "jackie", i just lost it and achieved a perfectly natural high for the rest of the show. i did however have mixed feelings about her performance of "nothing compares 2 u". she introduced it by asking the crowd if they were ready to rock, and then jumped dramatically foward with a smile on her face and launched into "it's been seven.." she skipped the parts of the song where she extends her voice the most, and the whole thing seemed pretty sarcastic - at the end instead of singing one of the lyrics she turned around to john and mouthed something to which he laughed. i don't think many noticed but she seemed to be just going through the motions during this song even though her voice is so amazing it was still great, and a really fun song for the crowd to sing along too. it became humorous both for the audience and sinead to sing little parts she left out; she even motioned for them to do it at one point. she played "this is a rebel song" acoustically, playing guitar herself without acompiniment. "he moved through the fair" was the encore and before starting it she said to the flute player, with whom she apears on his next album (forgot his name), "get your but up here", and flashed a dazzeling smile at him.

From: Charlie;

Funny, I imagined a few weeks ago that it would rain during the Fleadh, and Sinead would impulsively decide to sing Kingdom of Rain, but she'd need a male vocalist and I'd get up on stage and sing with her. Well, the rain was done when she came on, so I guess she decided not to help me live my fantasy. I'm pretty much in agreement with all said about her shows so far, so I won't bore everyone with repetition. The highlight for me, as always, was Fire On Babylon. I was totally creaming my pants! I had to leave her set to pee (the pain was terrible! luckily I could hear her even in the spot-a-pot/port-o-san/jiffy john). On my way back into the void of bodies, she began Nothing Compares 2 U (personally, I'm glad she did this number) and a father put his tiny daughter (surely only 12-18 months old!) on his shoulders and swayed her around while she clapped. Very nice. I noticed him covering her ears during Fire On Babylon because the sound was TERRIBLE on that song (though it still rocked!), but she wasn't crying.
